Myth or reality ? What we think we know (or not) about coffee

Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the world… and yet, it's also the one surrounded by the most myths and misconceptions. Between the fear of dehydration, the supposed effects on sleep, and vague claims about digestion, it's sometimes difficult to sort through the facts.

At Café Castelo, we believe that drinking well also means understanding better. So today, we're offering you a little exercise in truth: demystifying coffee, while respecting what has always defined us: passion, transparency, and listening.

Myth #1: "Coffee dehydrates you"

❌ Fake.

This is probably one of the most persistent myths. Yes, coffee is a mild diuretic. But according to several studies (notably published in the Journal of Applied Physiology), moderate coffee consumption has no significant effect on overall hydration.

What science says:
Unless you consume a very large amount of coffee in a short period of time, coffee contributes to your daily hydration intake, just like any other beverage. It doesn't replace water, but it doesn't negate it either.

In summary: Drink your coffee without fear. And as always, listen to your body.

Myth #2: "Coffee keeps you awake"

✅ True… but not always.

Caffeine is a stimulant, that's a fact. It can block the action of adenosine, a neurotransmitter that promotes sleep. That said, its effect depends on your metabolism, the time of day it's consumed, and the amount drunk.

What we recommend:

  • Avoid coffee 4 to 6 hours before bedtime, especially if you are sensitive.

  • Choose one Swiss-method decaffeinated, like our Deca Dolce Or Decaffeinated Guatemala and many others, which retain all the taste… without the stimulating effects.

Key points to remember: It's not about stopping coffee, but about adapting it to your rhythm.

Myth #3: "Coffee irritates the stomach"

🟡 True… for some.

In some people, caffeine can stimulate the production of stomach acid, which can create a feeling of discomfort if coffee is drunk on an empty stomach or consumed in large quantities.

What we often forget:
It's not just the caffeine, but also the type of roast and the quality of the coffee that play a role. Poorly roasted, overly acidic, or quickly processed coffee can be more aggressive.

At Café Castelo, we favour slow and artisanal roasting, and a rigorous selection of 100% Arabica coffees, often less acidic than Robusta.

Myth #4: "The stronger the coffee, the more caffeine it contains."

❌ Fake.

Many people believe that the intense taste of coffee is a sign of its caffeine content. In reality, Darker roasting slightly reduces the caffeine content. compared to lighter coffees.

What really influences caffeine:

  • The type of bean (Robusta contains twice as much caffeine as Arabica)

  • The quantity used

  • The brewing method (espresso, filter, press…)

👉 At Café Castelo, we work exclusively with top-grade Arabica beans, for a rich, complex, yet always balanced taste.

Myth #5: "Coffee is bad for your health"

❌ fake.

Numerous reputable studies (Harvard, WHO, American Heart Association) confirm that Coffee, consumed in moderation, is linked to several health benefits. :

  • Improved alertness and concentration

  • Reduction of the risk of neurodegenerative diseases

  • Significant antioxidant effect

  • Potential link with improved longevity

Of course, moderation remains essential. But with a quality coffee, properly prepared, You are far from harming your health, quite the opposite!

In conclusion

Coffee is not a simple beverage. It is rich, complex, and sometimes misunderstood. But through science, experience, and respect for its origins, it can be approached with accuracy.

At Café Castelo, we believe that good coffee starts with the quality of the beans… but also with honesty. That's why we've been with you for nearly 30 years, with passion and dedication, in every cup.
