What is the difference between Robusta and Arabica coffee?

Two varieties of coffee beans dominate the world of coffee: Arabica and Robusta. These two types of coffee offer distinct taste experiences and are appreciated differently by coffee lovers across various cultures. In this article, we explore the unique characteristics of Arabica and Robusta, highlighting the reasons behind our preference for Arabica coffee.

Arabica coffee: aromatic sweetness and complexity

Arabica coffee is renowned for its subtle aromatic notes and smooth mouthfeel. Grown primarily in the mountainous regions of Latin America, East Africa, and Asia, Arabica thrives at high altitudes, between 800 and 2000 meters. The cooler temperatures and well-defined seasons promote slow and optimal development of the beans, contributing to their rich, nuanced flavor and delicate texture. They offer a wide range of taste notes, from floral and fruity to nutty and chocolatey.

Robusta coffee: intensity and body

Robusta coffee, originating from Central and West Africa, is renowned for its intense flavor and full body. With almost twice the caffeine content of Arabica, Robusta offers a more pronounced and often more bitter taste. Unlike Arabica, Robusta is grown at lower altitudes, between 0 and 800 meters. Easier to cultivate, it exhibits more intense and earthy aromas. Robusta is preferred in some cultures, such as in Italy and Brazil, where its bitterness is particularly appreciated.

Our choice, at Café Castelo

At Café Castelo, our choice of roaster exclusively Arabica coffee This stems from our passion for subtlety and quality. We believe that every cup of coffee should be a rewarding sensory experience, one that Arabica can deliver. Arabica beans contain two to four times less caffeine than Robusta beans, resulting in a smoother, less bitter coffee with a more nuanced and balanced acidity. Our roasting process is meticulously adjusted to highlight the unique characteristics of each batch of Arabica, ensuring consistent quality and freshness.
