What's the difference between a latte, a macchiato and a cappuccino?

Do you know the difference between a cappuccino, a latte and a macchiato? In this article, we reveal the similarities and differences between these three popular caffeinated beverages. All three are made with espresso, but the key lies in their preparation and unique proportions.

The cappuccino

Cappuccino has its origins in Italy, more specifically in Vienna. The origin of its name is very interesting: it was inspired by the brown robes of the Capuchin monks, reflecting its unique color. The key proportions for making a cappuccino? One third!

⅓ of espresso, ⅓ of hot milk, ⅓ of firm foam.

For cappuccino lovers, we recommend our famous Black Honey. It blends well with the natural sweetness of milk and vegetable milks and its creaminess is perfect for this type of coffee.

The lath

Latte, also originally from Italy, is famous for its smooth, creamy texture. Unlike cappuccino, latte puts more emphasis on the creaminess of the milk, making it less intense in coffee and perfect for those who appreciate a milder-tasting coffee. The latte recipe is simple but effective:

⅓ of espresso, ⅔ of hot milk.

To make your own latte, try Yirgacheffe, which brings a beautiful intensity to the sweetness of the milk, with a dark chocolate profile on the finish.

The macchiato

Macchiato, often considered the most intense of the three, highlights the power of the espresso, softened by the lightness of the foam. It's the ideal choice for those seeking a strong yet balanced coffee. How to make it? It's probably simpler than you think:

½ cup of espresso, ½ cup of firm foam.

Calamaro, our lively Italian blend on the finish, balances perfectly with the milk foam of the macchiato. A must-have!
